Writer, director, producer, actor and occasional Survivor king, Mike White has been quietly building a killer résumé long before Tanya McQuoid ever stepped foot in a kaftan. Below, we round up his eight best projects (so far), to tide you over while we all collectively edge our way to season four.
1. The White Lotus (2021–)
Let’s start with the obvious: The White Lotus is Mike White’s magnum opus. A masterclass in satire, character study, and “how to make rich people seem simultaneously hilarious and terrifying,” this anthology is equal parts juicy and existential. Each season brings a new location, a new cast, and at least one dead body — plus the return of some fan favourites (Tanya forever).
From Hawaii to Sicily to Thailand, this is appointment TV with teeth. Bonus points for unhinged score, morally grey characters, and one-liners that could take out a man.
2. School of Rock (2003)
Yes, the Jack Black classic is a Mike White joint! Not only did he write the script, but he also plays Ned Schneebly — the real one — whose identity Jack Black’s Dewey steals to infiltrate a prep school and turn it into a rock battleground.
Still endlessly quotable, still the best use of a classroom since Matilda, and arguably the blueprint for cool teacher films everywhere. We owe White a debt for giving us this chaotic masterpiece and introducing a generation to the beauty of Stevie Nicks and face-melting solos.
3. Survivor: David vs Goliath (2018)
Plot twist: Mike White is a reality TV superfan and even competed on Survivor himself. In season 37, he made it all the way to the final day and came second — not bad for someone used to Four Seasons resorts instead of beach huts.
Watching him play the social game is oddly riveting, and it’s easy to see how his writer brain ticks — every alliance, blindside and backstab seems like a character arc. If you want to witness White go full island mode, this is your chance.
4. Enlightened (2011–2013)
Arguably the pre-White Lotus Mike White project that deserved way more hype. This HBO series, co-created with and starring Laura Dern, follows a corporate whistleblower trying to live a more “enlightened” life after a breakdown — and not always succeeding.
It’s raw, weird, funny and often painfully real. Think spiritual awakening meets office politics, with some of White’s most introspective writing to date. It only ran for two seasons, but its impact is still felt (and yes, The White Lotus fans will love it).
5. Chuck & Buck (2000)
Early Mike White is dark. This indie gem — which he wrote and starred in — is an unsettling exploration of obsession and repression. White plays Buck, a man stuck in his childhood years who tracks down his former best friend (and childhood love), now a slick music industry exec.
It’s uncomfortable, brave, and a million miles from the glitzy world of White Lotus. Proof that Mike has never been afraid to go weird — and go deep.
6. The Good Girl (2002)
Another underrated gem from White’s screenwriting credits. Starring Jennifer Aniston in one of her most critically acclaimed roles, The Good Girl is a bleak, funny, and melancholy look at small-town boredom and marital malaise.
White’s fingerprints are all over this — emotionally trapped characters, awkward silences, and a protagonist spiralling into poor decisions. A must-watch for fans of Enlightened and the darker corners of White Lotus.
7. Pitch Perfect 3 (2017)
Wait, what? Yes, really. Mike White co-wrote the third Pitch Perfect movie. While it may not be the most critically revered of the trilogy, there’s something delightfully unhinged about its “acapella-meets-action-movie” energy — and you can definitely feel White’s offbeat humour poking through.
Plus, who among us hasn’t wanted to see Fat Amy in full combat mode?
8. Beatriz at Dinner (2017)
Another collaboration with director Miguel Arteta, Beatriz at Dinner stars Salma Hayek as a holistic healer who unexpectedly stays for dinner at a wealthy client’s home — and things quickly unravel. It’s tense, sharp, and very White Lotus coded: think class conflict, spiritual unease, and rich people being weird around those who challenge their worldview.
It also features one of the most quietly powerful dinner table scenes in recent memory.
